Sore losers? Identity versus ideology in the Democratic race
A Gallup analysis looks beyond the percentage of Obama (19%) or Clinton (28%) supporters who would vote for McCain (or at least say so now) to see who it is that would make the jump to McCain. Interestingly, they find that it is not people who identify with either candidate by race or gender, but (unsurprisingly) by ideology. I guess it’s less about identifying with one candidate and being so invested that you’d sacrifice the party out of resentment and more about ideology.
Then again, I don’t really think this poll says much as we are more than half a year out and the nominees of the two parties haven’t stood next to each other to be sized up by the American people. This campaign has shown us that the more than 6 months to the general election will be an eternity.
