Who is the Elitist?

April 15, 2008

Just one more thought tonight. It seems to me that the real elitist is the one who thinks that it’s acceptable to use superdelegates to reverse the outcome of the primary process which shows that voters prefer (so far, and I think it will in the end) the other candidate. It’s saying the party elite are somehow wiser than the voters. Perhaps we should lay off the name calling given the premise of Clinton’s only chance at getting the nomination lies with the “educated” fixing the decision of the voters. I can’t find the article I read earlier highlighting the improbability of Clinton getting the nomination, but if I find it, I’ll post it.

Disclaimer–I know that Obama also needs superdelegates to get to 2025, but her spokespeople have repeatedly said that it’s ok to overturn the outcome if supers find her to be a better candidate. Clinton even said

“Superdelegates are by design supposed to exercise independent judgment, that is the way the system works.”

Tell me that that independent judgment wasn’t designed to protect the party from what officials deemed to be an unwise choice.

Did you see the Colbert Report last night [April 16]? He made the same point during the “word” segment, essentially saying that Clinton is a master panderer, ready on day one to be condescender in chief to regular people, unless those regular people prefer Barack Obama, in which case it’s time for the Superdelegates to come together and save us from those rubes. Something like that.
