10 Years Later

I’ve started watching West Wing for the umpteenth time, and this clip struck me as worth sharing. The premise is that these are the parents of a teenager who was the victim of a hate crime. As a result, Congress passed and the White House signed hate crimes legislation. This was an obvious reference to Matthew Shepard, but in this alternate reality, hate crimes legislation passed quickly. When the parents come to the White House, staff expected that the father was quiet because he was embarassed of having a gay son. Here is his response. Sadly, it remains timely 10 years later.

as i sit and listen to this clip, i realize he is speaking what i am feeling in my heart. i truly believe that my president, who i supported long before he began his campaign, has let us down on gay rights. i hear people say he has so much to do, he has to prioritize, etc. but it seems to me that he needs to start with equal rights for all. as someone before stood for his rights, it is his time and duty to do the same now for others. why is he silent – why is he not stepping up – how will he feel if one day one of his children or a niece or nephew or grandchild comes to him and says “i’m gay” and he can’t say “i stood for you”.
the end of discrimination and true equality for all needs to be fought for from the top of our government as well as in the trenches in each home, town and state.
