Maryland Marriage Update: March 10
March 10, 2010
Some more developments from Maryland following Attorney General Gansler’s opinion that Maryland should recognize out-of-state same sex marriages.
- Delegate Don Dwyer Jr. announced (with no legislative supporters at his press conference) that he would try to impeach AG Gansler. Theatrically, he announced he’d have to be physically removed from the building if Democrats tried to stop him. Turns out, he doesn’t really have legal legs to stand on in this dramatic proclamation.
- Over 100 clergy signed on in support of marriage equality. You can see the ad that ran in Maryland papers here.
- Polling shows that while a slight plurality support marriage equality (47% favoring equality, 44% opposing), a clear majority (51% to 39%) would oppose a referendum–similar to what we saw in Maine–to overturn marriage equality if the legislature legalized same sex marriage.
